Lowman School
  Learning starts in Kindergarten

  MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The Lowman Special Education Center staff and I would like to welcome you and your children to our school. Everyone at Lowman works hard to meet the needs of each student. However, this must be a team effort to maximize abilities. To increase the degree of success, we encourage frequent and open communication among parents, teachers, and administrators. At Lowman we are proud of our special efforts to create and promote a good relationship between the home and school. Regular conferences and frequent contacts with parents are part of these efforts. Parents are encouraged to initiate their own contacts whenever they wish. As a team we can continue working together to provide learning excellence and social growth for every child.

Sincerely,

Helen Hartel
Principal

VISION, MISSION, BELIEFS

During the 1994-95 school year, parents and staff worked together in a process suggested by LEARN to envision the best possible school for our youngsters. To achieve our vision, student outcomes have been identified and work has been ongoing to implement promising practices and evaluate our progress toward these goals. Although visioning is future oriented, we continue our dialogue with those most interested in the children and their education in order to meet the challenge and evolve along with our students and our community.

VISION

Prepare for the future:
Do your best and feel good about it.

MISSION
To maintain the highest standards of safety. -To teach as a team from a common curriculum, to provide a continuity of education for our students. -To teach all students to achieve the highest level of communication possible, using alternative communication where needed. -To teach functional self-help skills to ensure maximum self-reliance for our students in their daily living. -To teach physical and thinking skills needed for home, school, and community environments, leading to independence. -To teach the social conventions and provide the opportunities for students to have friends and find acceptance in their neighborhoods and society.

BELIEFS

We serve our students best by working together as a team --- parents, students, staff, and community. - Every decision is evaluated in light of what best meets our students' needs. -We have high expectations for every student. -Students are listened to and their choices are honored. -All students deserve equal access to appropriate resources, curriculum, and support services.

HISTORY

Opening in 1952, Lowman Special Education Center, Los Angeles Unified School District, was named in honor or Dr. Charles Leroy Lowman (1879-1977), the first orthopedic surgeon in the West, who devoted his life to the service of children with disabilities.

We have a specially trained staff of over a hundred dedicated, caring professionals. Lowman serves approximately 300 students, ages 3-22.
